There are so many great children’s books by Scottish authors, here are my favourites;
1. Peter Pan
Written by J M Barrie of Kirriemuir, Peter Pan is a classic that most of you will have read and cherished. J M Barrie was one of ten children. He studied at Edinburgh University where he went on to become chancellor later on in life. Before his death Barrie gave the rights to Peter Pan to Great Ormond Street Hospital.
3. The Gruffalo
Written by Julia Donaldson who although originally born in London now lives and works in Glasgow. The Gruffalo has achieved huge popularity peaking with the Christmas television version narrated by James Corden and Helena Bonham Carter. In 2011 Julia was appointed Children’s Laureate and awarded an MBE.
Written by Mairi Hedderwick who now lives in Gourock but previously lived on the remote island of Coll. She lived there with no electricity and no running water. Her Katie Morag books have been turned into an animated children series.
We were sent a copy of this from Random House and Erin loved it, “good fun, royal, made me happy”. The Princess Poppy series is written by Janey Louise Jones of Edinburgh. Janey studied at Edinburgh University before launching The Jelly Club, a range of children’s activity centres in and around Edinburgh.
Hardly needs an introduction, JK Rowling lives in Edinburgh and famously penned the first books at The Elephant House coffee shop just off The Royal Mile.
Written by one of the most famous Scottish authors Robert Louise Stevenson. Stevenson was born in Edinburgh and studied at Edinburgh University. He travelled the world before settling in Samoa. Stevenson is also famously known for The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
8. I’m me
Written by historical and crime novelist Sara Sheridan. You can see her talking about the book here. You can also follow her on twitter @sarasheridan
